Icelandic Wool 'A Sign of Quality'

About Ístex, the Icelandic Textile Industry

Wool processing has been a trade in Mosfellsbaer since 1896, previously with the the company Álafoss of Iceland. In 1991, the company Ístex was formed and took over the wool processing. Ístex stands for Íslenskur Textiliðnaður which translates into Icelandic Textile Industry.

Istex is the company producing and selling the famous Alafoss-lopi and other Lopi yarns for hand knitting such as Plötulopi, Bulky Lopi and Létt-Lopi. Ístex is also selling handknitted sweaters and accessories as well as blankets and throws. They are manufacturers of industrial yarns for knitting, weaving and carpet manufacturing. All their products are made out of high quality Icelandic wool.

Ístex buys the wool directly from the farmers in Iceland and then processes it in to yarn. The wool scouring is located in the town Blönduós and the spinning mill in the town Mosfellsbaer, both are situated nearby Reykjavik.
Without Sheep It has been said that 'Without sheep Iceland would have been uninhabitable'. How true this is. The Icelandic sheep are unique - Evolving over 1,100 years of exposure to the sub-Arctic elements, Icelandic wool has a distinctive combination of inner and outer fibres. The outer fibres are long, glossy, tough and water-resistant, while the inner ones are fine, soft and insulating, providing a high resistance to cold and rain.
